JPG is best for photos because it compresses well; PNG is best for graphics and screenshots because it is lossless; PDF is best for documents you want to look the same everywhere; CSV is best for simple tabular data; JSON is best for structured data exchanged between programs.

Converting between formats never adds detail that was not in the original file. A JPG turned into a PNG will not become sharper, and a PDF turned into text will lose its layout.

For printing, prefer PDF or high-resolution PNG. For sharing on the web, prefer JPG or WebP for photos and PNG for graphics with text.
